We made double our goal coming in at $1,000. This is incredible considering we have never had a budget, nevermind a G. We'll be getting everything all together and dialed in for the tentative late July release date. I'm planning on throwing a big party at my shop here in Providence, Amigos. Until then, come swing by the shop, buy some zines and tote bags from the web store, and read my Tioga Comp III product write up on ESPN.

Issue 9 Fundraiser

Today I launched a Kickstarter to help cover some of the costs necessary to produce the final issue of Holeshot. To keep our approach fresh, Issue 9 will be a box set of zines and materials produced by Holeshot's main contributors and friends. Since its beginning, Holeshot has generally taken the form of a normal 5.5"x8.5" zine format. To celebrate the end of the zine though, Issue 9 will be a box set of zines and materials from Holeshot's contributors and friends. Included in each box set will be a multitude of zines, photographs, DVD-R, and BMX ephemera. Our working edition is 250. The end result will be a box that resembles a book that can be shelved. Our contribtutors and their prospective projects are:

Andrew Burton Hyde Pride Zine - Interviews, photos, and more relating the to great skatepark located in Hyde Park, Massachusetts.
Chester Jones - Blazeguard
Kyle Emery-Peck - set of 10 color and black and white 4x6 photographs
Jake Honesto - Bears
Matt Gaspar - Hangn Brain 2 - Holeshot's funniest contributor. Responsible for the famed Hank Hill bikecheck, Beetlejuice Trail Digger drawing, Evolution of Osiris D3's article.

There will be no advertising in Issue 9. Instead we are hoping that our readers and prospective advertisers can help us reach a modest goal of $500 to cover some of printing, packaging, and shipping costs. The first time I ever rode my BMX bike in Providence I was in 8th or 9th grade, I can't fully remember. A kid, Shawn Summers, had moved to Taunton from Agawam and I met him because he had a Dirtbag clothing tee shirt on. As an only child and teenager obsessed with BMX, my dream of another BMXer moving to my town basically came true. Anyways, we met and hung out and Shawn became part of the small crew of kids who rode BMX "seriously". Later on Shawn went through a few different incarnations, but he was always a pretty funny and nice dude.

It was Daylight Saving Time the day we had all been promised by Shawn that we were going to Providence. So, as Shawn had advised, we all met at his house bright and early. It was at this point that we all realized the first problem of the day. Shawn's parents owned an emerald green Ford Taurus sedan and we were supposed to fit five bikes, five BMXers, Shawn's little brother Brett, and his parents. In case you lost count that's eight people in a sedan. When Mr. Summers first learned of this he was understandably irate. It even seemed like we may not get the chance to go to Providence. In fact I figured one of us would have taken the noble route and skipped out on the opportunity. Not myself but one of my other friends that is. Of course none of us skipped out and we all acted as if Mr. Summers was completely out of line for getting worked about such a thing. Looking back, I can't even believe that we fit the bikes on the bike rack, nevermind ourselves in the car. We did it though and we eventually made our way to Providence.

Road Fools 4 had just come out and they rode Providence in it. We were basically foaming at the mouths to go sit around at spots that we wouldn't do a thing on. Except Shawn. Shawn tried a bunch of shit like he always did and in the process he got a flat tire. Probably annoyed with the shit show on the way up, we were left to our own devices in the city. This meant we had to find a place for a tube and tools by bike. After some directions we made it up to the Benny's on Branch Ave, which seemed worlds away from where we were riding earlier that day. Shawn sweet talked a gas station attendant into letting him borrow some tools and with the tube from Benny's we were on our way. The day was winding down so we eventually just ended up riding a nice ledge at Waterplace park. There was one problem, the previous nights clock changing had made us late for our meeting time. Adding insult to injury Shawn's parents were looking for us. This was pre cell phones so the only thing we could do was go wait at the proposed meeting spot. Luckily it all worked out like things usually do and we finally got the cars packed up and made our way back to Taunton.

But not before getting lost and confused between the 95 and 195 signs, Shawn's mom saying she was going to call Dan Yorke about how confusing this was, Shawn then yelling "Mom, Dan Yorke doesn't give a fuck about you or these roads!", Shawn's dad then yelling at him, and in between them all and in the midst of everything, Brett plugging his ears with his index fingers and humming "lalalalala" at the top of his lungs.

I often wonder why kids are obsessed with riding spots that pros ride in videos and more importantly why people even travel to ride their bikes to spots that are basically the same as what they have available in their own city. Thinking about this story though, it sort of all makes sense.

Thought this guy disappeared off the face of the earth, though new sightings have been reported in the Worcester area. According to a good friend he was quoted as saying "brought you back some moon rocks" following a head high, flyout at a local skatepark. Landing the phrase into one of the most popular things yelled at the trails.

If you lucky enough to meet him, he may take you to his training facilities, where there have been accounts of 4 story tall drop ins to dirt bike-esque kickers. all i can say is "OH Hell Yeah"

In 1997 I made the worst zine. I doubt you could even call it a zine, it was pretty pathetic- and looking back, embarrassing- but to be fair, I was 13 and from Taunton Massachusetts, not the "city", and it was pre-internet. Luckily, I had good taste in photos to rip off. That photo of Nyquist in Columbus is still sick. Here are two pages, which may have been how long it was I can't remember.

The other day at the Hyde park OS Jam I ran into Frankie Benevides. Frankie ran Sound MFG. Sound was sick and I was always so psyched that local people made things, and cool looking clothes at that. Plus he made a sweet Black Flag rip-off shirt. Actually Sound is up there with some of the things that have been hugely inspiring. He gave me a bunch of OG stickers the other day and I couldn't be more hyped! Thanks Frankie!

Usually newspaper and non BMX media photographers usually get it all wrong. No take offs to ground the viewer, off timing, etc.; the photos make BMX look even goofier than it already is. Not these photos from the LIFE archives though. Obviously they are less than perfect but there's something about the rider's back dropped by a lonely, smog-ridden BMX track that looks pretty sweet.

The first time I ever met Emerson was at this wall. I filmed him and it went in those old shitty (awesome) video we made called "Suburban Shred". I didn't know him then so I titled the clip "Pawtucket". Fast forward and Emerson is probably the best bike rider. A true freestyler, he'll ride anything in his way and get real sick doing it. Not sure how to get a copy but he's got this great blog which kind of works in the same way. There's so much embarrassing American stuff in there, it's crazy (see above). Finally watched this flick lastnight and I must say it was pretty amazing. I know I am pretty late on this (by about 5 years) but if you still haven't seen it I highly recommend doing so. Such a crazy story. Have a good and safe weekend! if you live in Rhode Island go buy some roman candles or some shit, they're legal now (sort of)!

Not too long ago I applied for this job for the Internet Archive and namely the Wayback Machine. Nothing ever came of it but I have spent some of my own time surfing around and coming across some sites myself and my friends used to make. One of my biggest inspirations for my old zine and Holeshot was everything by The Giraffe Brothers. Please go read it, especially if you live in New England because you'll probably get the references to someone like Island Jo (Baldheaded guy with coiled snake tattooed on his head who rode Skater Island).

It's a good compilation of writings from zines compiled by The Fact Sheet Five. There's obviously some nerdy/wack stuff in it but it's cool and has a great article on Dishwasher Pete and Bozo Texino which sort of brings me to my next summer activity.

5.Getting In The Van.

In a few days Holeshot will be leaving a trail of dust behind us in New England as we embark on the New England Gypsy Tour. I'm honored to be involved and as well as having a tight crew (Brian Nguyen, Kyle Emery-Peck, Jake Honesto, Brian McDonough, Myself and Maybe Ivers?) we'll be visiting all sorts of Holeshot cohorts and shredding the shittiest spots in our party van! And to tie in that Dishwasher Pete thing, check out Podcast #102 of This American Life where they chronicle the highly romanticized American roadtrip.

Normally I don't condone working on things during the summer but I gotta get issue 8 going and I think it's going to be travel themed. If you have any off the normal bmx travel stories to contribute, give me a shout and we'll see if we can fit it in. This issue will also include another goody to be revealed at a later time.

The other day at the trails, I was informed that there was a BMX Quiz on the internet. I googled it and about 4 million popped up. This one is my favorite, sort of because it doesn't work and how can he even confirm some of these nicknames?

When speaking about the "BMX Hall" of fame ( possibly incarnated by someone who knows how to tell CW bars from their nock offs made 25 years ago, just by the knurling patterns) why hasn't the name Ice Money come about. Though his background is a little clouded and possibly changes from each different Vans Triple Crown event or CFB contest, he is undoubtedly one of the worlds finest Bmxers. here are some selected images that further advance my position on his upcoming nomination.

Competitive Career, Rampage
Originally from BlueGrass, Iowa, Rick's long history in BMX can be dated back to 1985 being ranked as American Bicycle Association (ABA) National #11 Pro and 2 short years later winning the American Freestyle Association (AFA) Pro Overall (flatland and ramps) title, making Rick the first competitor in BMX and Freestyle to win national pro races and pro freestyle competitions. In 1990, Rick made the A Pro Main event at the ABA National in Rockford, Illinois and won the Pro dirt jumping contest between his motos, along with his win at the Trend Bike Source Pro Street Contest earlier that summer and with finishing in the top 5 at the King of Vert Miniramp contest in Indianapolis, he completed an all around feat of top pro competitive finishes that will never be duplicated again in BMX or Freestyle and is virtually incomparable in any other sport.

As an innovator in freestyle, Rick's flatland riding style would leave a definitive mark in the flatland world with the tricks he invented and perfected and the fast and aggressive way he approached each and every contest and show. From 1985-1988, Rick won every year end title for flatland competitions, one year going undefeated.

The transition from rider to industry innovator, and then to riding legend was cemented for Rick in 1989 when he purchased a small indoor skatepark in Moline Illinois called Rampage. Rick would remain the sole owner and operator of the legendary park until 2003 and his time on and off his bike during the Rampage era paved the way and defined the riding and business model that competitive riders follow to this day as private park owners.

During this time as a rider, Rick re-invented himself and the sport with a style of riding that was un-matched in a skatepark or on a miniramp. He invented a whole genre of tricks that had never been done on a bike or a ramp before, and some not since. Through the bootleg videos of his private riding sessions and with virtually no media coverage, and no with no competitive interest, Rick was able to created a haven for the up and coming riders from all over the world to train and push the limits of the sport into the "modern era" of freestyle you see today at the X-Games and on the Dew Tour.

Additionally, during the down time in the industry, especially for the competitive rider, Rick's Park, Rampage, would be home to the longest running contest series in the history of freestyle, the Kong of the Skateparks series lasted over 12 years and saw some of the top names in the sport today (riding and industry) compete as armatures and professionals.

As a life long resident of Davenport Iowa, Rick is still actively involved in the industry with Standard Byke Company, designing, testing and manufacturing one of the highest quality BMX and freestyle frames on the market today, Made in the USA of course. Rick's contributions to the ground braking contributions have helped progress production into a new era for BMX and ensure that quality products are the norm rather than the exception today in the industry. he is also active in the BMX racing world, sponsoring a national race team through his skate and bmx shop Goodtimes Superstore and is the 2010 Illinois State Commissioner for the National Bicycle League (NBL) and was influential in shaping the direction of the new Davenport Iowa public skatepark. In addition to all of this, most of Rick's days begin at the skatepark doing what he has always done, pushing himself, his riding, and those around him to improve their riding, themselves, and their surroundings.

This is pretty cool if you've got 13 minutes. And while I do think it's a little weird that there was a skatevideo discussion at MOMA, it's pretty sweet. The more low brow and down to earth we can make art museums, the better it is. On the same note the more sophisticated and cool skateboarding gets, the worse it is. I guess like anything, it's about finding a happy medium. Regardless, Tobin Yelland's thoughts on Anti-Hero videos are great. I think all skate and BMX videos should be like that. Kind of like the 90East flick is. Just documenting what was going on at a certain time. And while it is by no means a fully encompassing local video, it definitely has a great vibe with tons of local dudes in it. Grab it, watch it, and be mesmerzied by the Abdul follow line at night. It's so fast and filmed in front of him!
